One of Our Own Ties the Knot in a Vintage Woodsy Wedding

California Home + Design's Online Editor, Owen Ray, wed his lovely wife, Caitlin, at Stern Grove Trocadero Clubhouse in San Francisco. Pardon our bias as CHD's sister company (aka Owen's co-workers), but we can't help getting lost in these wedding photos and falling back in time for a moment.

Nestled deep in the misty redwood grove of Stern Grove on September 17, two lovers wed their passion for vintage lifestyle, DIY aesthetic, and rustic Americana in a woodland whimsy wedding. Owen Bradley Ray wrote the entire ceremony for his bride Caitlin Moneypenny-Johnston. The bride wore a ‘50s blue-green strapless tea-length frock from Dear Golden Vintage, the groom a ‘40s fleck suit bought from Decades of Fashion on Haight Street. The bride completed her ensemble with vintage organza ruffle gloves, vintage rhinestone jewelry, a black vintage ‘50s bustier and rum-filled flask-holster garter from Dollhouse Bettie on Haight Street.

The groom got ready with some man-time, treating friends to old school-style pompadour haircuts by Nicky the Barber of Bay City Barber Salon, while the bride’s retro-style ‘40s coif was masterfully crafted by Miss Summer of On Mars on Fillmore Street.

Floral designer Michele Quain worked with the bride to set the mood for the enchanted woodland theme, which carried from the redwood grove to the historic Trocadero Clubhouse, originally a hotel built in 1892. DIY handmade mason jar terrariums filled with fresh moss, acorns, nests, feathers, twigs, toadstools, birds, ladybugs, and pinecones were centerpieces. The tables were sprinkled with subtle votive candles and flower arrangements in tones of deep, dark red & vibrant jewel-toned pink: Dahlias, hydrangea, anemones, chocolate cosmos, spray roses, scabiosa flowers and pods, hypericum berry, helaboris, mint, chamomile, scented geranium and blackberry branches.

Guests noshed on tacos from El Tonayense truck and handmade gelato from La Copa Loca Gelato, then danced the calories away to ‘50s rockabilly music by DJ Oran. Scott Fong Photo captured their enchanted memories using a style that combines modern photojournalism with vintage photo style colors and finishes. Event coordination was executed by Libby Garrison.
