Over easy! The Giants swept the Tigers in one of the most lopsided World Series events in history. We can’t wait for the parade of course, but… wow, that was fast. We would be lying if we thought World Series-mania wouldn’t continue throughout this whole week. Now that there are no more Giants games to obsess over, what do we do? Here are a few suggestions for easing back into San Francisco life (boozing optional):
Cheer on a New Team!
Baseball season may be over, but hockey has just begun (yes, SF now has a hockey team). The San Francisco Bulls are only six games into their first season (they’ve got a 2-4 record thus far) with matches scheduled through March. The next month brings opponents like the Utah Grizzlies, Stockton Thunder, and the Idaho Steelheads. This league is no joke. The Bulls are the ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, which means the players are a combo of NHL contracted players, free agents from Canada and Europe, and NCAA college stars. Tickets range from $14.25 to $41 (and no $12 pints of beer here!). All home games are played at the Cow Palace in Daly City.
Get Cultured in a Non-Sports Fashion!
While bars have been exploding out onto the street for weeks, the Opera and the Symphony have been quietly chugging along in a slightly more elegant manner. So trade in your beer and shots for champagne and rosé at intermission (hangover slightly different, yet still viable). SF Opera has performances of both Moby Dick and Lohengrin on deck this week, while the Symphony is showing a silent horror film accompanied by an organ (costumes welcome!). There's also a Diá de los Muertos concert later in the week.
Celebrate Halloween! And Diá de los Muertos!
Well, this is a no-brainer for SF residents who take every chance to dig out the costume trunk and adorn themselves in fur, feathers, face paint, and general freakdom. Continue your post-Giants parade high with a Ghost Walk at City Hall, join a Halloween Flashdance, or boogie your way through a late night of DJ dancing at hot spots like the Clift, Public Works, or Milk Bar. Watch a Scary Movie!
You know what sounds scary? Staying home curled up on the couch for once, gasp! San Francisco is lacking in the freak yourself out film department (Castro Theatre has a couple of options this week, but that’s about it). So get down to your local video store, fire up the popcorn, turn off the lights, and prepare to disrupt your sleep with one of these top picks.
Eat Somewhere New!
Tired of sausages, hot dogs, corn dogs, burgers, and other baseball fare? Satisfy your comfort food craving with the latest in steaming Dim Sum, decadent mac n cheese, and yummy pizza. Or, celebrate Halloween the foodie way at one of the spooky culinary bashes happening in town.
Go Dancing!
Cafe Cocomo has salsa and Latin Dancing every night for most of the week and often there are lessons beforehand. ODC has loads of classes from Bollywood to ballet to flamenco to hula to tap, you name it. Or, go to Hard French at El Rio for a soul music dance party on Saturday afternoon. And there's always 80's night at the Cat Club (hangover guaranteed with top 40 in the front room and industrial in the back).
