With the stress of Holiday shopping and preparing your homes for the scrutiny of your relatives, baking your own Holiday desserts are left on the back burner. That’s why we’ve rounded up our favorite bakeries in the east bay so you can pick-up and pre-order your holiday favorites and perhaps take credit for baking them-- we won’t tell.
Buche de Noel
No holiday is complete without the Buche de Noel and Masse’s offers the best around. Their traditional Mocha Buche is an almond sponge cake log filled with chocolate ganache and coffee butter cream and topped with a winter forest finish. If you’re not a fan of coffee, Masse’s offers two slight variations on this traditional treat: the Black Forest made with chocolate chiffon cake and kirsch soaked cherries or the Passion Fruit Meringue with a golden sponge cake layered with tangy passion curd and Italian meringue. Order these cakes a couple days in advance in either the 10-inch ($45) or 15-inch logs ($60). Nothing warms the holiday spirit faster than some spiked egg nog. This year, try Sweet Adeline Bakeshop’s take on the tasty beverage with their Eggnog Bundt Cake: a rum and brandy pound cake scented with nutmeg and a rum glaze ($25). If that still hasn't tempted you, you can opt for their Eggnog Cheesecake made with natural cream cheese flavored with nutmeg, cinnamon, and brandy in a gingersnap crust ($30). 3350 Adeline Street.
The chocolates at Chocolatier Blue are anything but ordinary. Here, you can customize your box of chocolates with classic holiday favorites such as candy cane, apple cider, pumpkin, or sugar cookie. Chocolatier Blue even has a sweet potato casserole truffle made with fresh roasted sweet potato caramel layered with toasted marshmallows wrapped in milk chocolate. For the more adventurous, try the cranberry jalapeno for a combination of fruit and a tinge of heat cooked into caramel surrounded by dark chocolate. You’ve probably heard of La Farine because of their flaky melt-in-your-mouth morning buns or perhaps their fresh fruit tarts, but come holiday season, customers will line up into their store because they’ve managed to perfect the art of fruitcake with their stollen. Their stollen ($16) is made with a raisin and almond yeast cake and a Marzipane center that’ll leave you craving for more once you’re through. Skip the strain and tedious labor of making gingerbread men and head over to Teacake Bake Shop for one of their Spiced Iced Molasses Cookies. Made with molasses, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and orange icing, this cookie is different from your traditional gingerbread in a good way. These cookies will put you in the holiday spirit in no time.
