These restaurants are new to the 650 and promise ample opportunity for sustenance, a chance to get out of the 415, and maybe even a little sun.

Craft cocktails, sustainable, savory fare, a rooftop garden, and a “living wall" are a part of a revamp in San Mateo, for Three Restaurant & Bar (50 East Third Avenue near South San Mateo Drive), which serves lunch, dinner and weekend brunch–and they've got something for everyone. If you forget a jacket, you can cozy up by a fireplace with a plate of pig parts (hello, hoisin pulled pork tacos or braised slab bacon carbonara) and bigger groups can nab the communal area. Three is a spot that is owned by Chef Alicia Petrakis and Eleni Lolas, the same folks who ran Astaria at the same address for the past decade. Save room at Three for dessert, since Petrakis makes the sweetie treats, like Cinnabun bread pudding or PB&J Graham Cracker Parfait, and many of the other house goods from scratch.   

For those craving dessert first, the Palo Alto opening of Tin Pot Creamery(855 El Camino Real @ NEED) is definitely a potential boon. Scoops are made with Straus organic milk in seasonal flavors like cherry cheesecake and Earl Grey. Or, you can swoon over licks of salted butterscotch, which is a nice update on the salt-on-everything-sweet trend. If you wantto satisfy your sweet tooth and your need for caffeinated in one fell swoop, try their Four Barrel coffee ice cream with cacao nibs. Or drink it down with an affogato, a creamy blend of espresso and ice cream. Note that Tin Pot is open for business with “limited hours,” so it’s good to call ahead before a visit.

San Carlos is now home to Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company (935 Washington Street @ Industrial Rd.) which means you can get your craft beer on over a growler of Full Boar Scotch Ale, delectably light Silicon Blonde (check out the label image and tell us if it reminds you of anyone), and sunny-yet-mellow California Sunshine IPA. The company opened in 2001 and is named after the canyon in Belmont and San Carlos, which was called “la Canada del Diablo” until the 1780s. Extra Kegerators are being added to handle the new customer volume, and the management says they are updating the beer garden space, just in time for summer. There’s always craft root beer for the designated drivers to enjoy, too.
