Songs Along a Stony Road, SF Silent Film Fest, The Artist, and Disposable Film Night
The Roxie will screen the Bay Area premiere of Songs Along a Stony Road, a film about musicologist Zoltán Kallós' journey through villages in Transylvania and Romanian Moldavia. Make room for quiet time at the 17th annual Silent Film Fest featuring the newly restored 1927 Wings with the first-ever Oscar winner William Wellman. Stay in the silent mood with a screening of The Artist in Union Square. Or check out this week's Cal Academy Nightlife event, which is all about disposable filmmaking, with this year's festival shorts and a flipbook animation booth.

Bastille Day
French or not, partake in parties celebrating the storming of the Bastille in 1789. Vintage 415 and Taverna Aventine are throwing a day-early happy hour extravaganza on Friday, 7/13. Then, Artpoint hosts Paris is Burning, a special after-hours party with access to the JPG exhibit at the de Young on Saturday. Or for a very sophisticated French affair (probably teeming with lots of natives), check out the Consul General of France's cocktail reception at the War Memorials' Green Room. And, of course, there's always the festivities on Belden Lane.

The character chameleon makes her big debut at this SFMOMA show of more than 150 works, from early images of Sherman's student days at Buffalo State College and her famous black-and-white "Untitled Film Stills" to a series of so-called centerfolds and a recent study of socialites of a certain age.

Man Ray | Lee Miller
One of the steamiest affairs in the art world's history comes to life in "Man Ray | Lee Miller: Partners in Surrealism." As a lover, muse, and model to surrealist Man Ray, Lee Miller was a force in her own right, having made a name for herself as a fashion and portrait photographer in the 1920s and '30s. In this exhibit, nearly 115 photos, paintings, and drawings shed light on the artists' creative and romantic collaboration.

Visions of Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club are etched in my brain forever.
