“Mutables”
The portrait has been reinvented for the new exhibit at the Eli Ridgway Gallery. “Mutables” is a collection of imaginative revisions to the traditional artistic field of portraiture. The series of photographs employs various elements of disguise, such as costume and other deceptive elements, to present modern ambiguous interpretations of the subjects’ subconscious and features images from Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman, and Ralph Eugene Meatyard.

Lecture
Salman Rushdie on Joseph Anton
Join celebrated author Salman Rushdie as he discusses his latest memoir, Joseph Anton. Hear about his 10 years spent in hiding, living under a death threat from the Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini, all because of the content he published in his novel The Satanic Verses. If you can’t make the event, don’t fret: his lecture will be streamed live on the JCC website.

Northern California Action/Sports Film Festival
SF IndieFest, the local campaigner for independent film, is adding a new festival to their lineup. Kicking off IndieFest’s Fall/Winter season, the Northern California Action/Sports Film Festival will be screened at different venues throughout the Bay Area with free admission. This is the first Northern California festival devoted to action/sports films, and will showcase more than twenty different independent productions featuring surfing, skating, climbing, biking, paddling and mountaineering. There will also be other events and merriment happening during the festival, such as an opening night screening of Manufacturing Stoke at the Roxie Cinema, and nightly theme parties with music, snacks and beverages at CellSpace.

Winchester Mystery House Fright Nights
As if this world-famous haunted house wasn’t scary enough, the Winchester Mystery House will be transformed into a terrifying Halloween experience throughout September and October. Take a tour of the infamous haunts as you visit the mansion, graveyard, maze, and bell tower where Sarah Winchester held her nightly séances. With surprises around every corner, costumed performers, and “interactive” elements, this is not for the faint of heart.

Midnight in Paris
Film Night in the Park will be screening the classic Woody Allen romantic comedy about a family who takes a trip to Paris. The film borders on the cusp of fantasy while exploring themes of both modernism and nostalgia. Acclaimed as one of Allen’s best works in recent years, Midnight in Paris won both the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay in 2012.

Cal Performances Fall Free-For-Fall
The popular Fall Free for All, an open house presented by Cal Performances for the community, is back this year with a wide array of music, theater and dance acts. You can catch performances by the Cal Band, String Quartet, pianist Shai Wosner, Chitresh Das Dance Company, and shadow puppets with Daniel Barash.

Oktoberfest By the Bay
What do tasty food, cold beer and oompah music have in common? You guessed it: Oktoberfest is back! This year, the party is bigger than ever. The venue has moved to Pier 48 to accommodate a larger capacity of people, vendors, dancers, musicians, and all around entertainment. There will also be two separate sessions held on Saturday so you can be sure to get in enough brew, spätzle, and lederhosen.

“Garza Marfa”
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new Heath Ceramics store in the Mission, now is the perfect opportunity. The retail space will be hosting “Garza Marfa,” a six-week exhibition of furniture and household linens from the husband-and-wife design team Jamey Garza and Constance Holt-Garza. The couple, who hail from Marfa, Texas brings this sense of place to their designs. The show also marks the launch of Garza’s leather furniture line, which will be available exclusively in California at Heath locations.

Bebel Gilberto
Grammy nominated Brazilian vocalist Bebel Gilberto will be performing at the 4th annual Hope and Healing Concert Benefit with an opening act by Diana Gameros. The proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to the Instituto Familiar de la Raza. For the past 30 years, the organization has been dedicated to addressing the social service needs of the Chicano and Latino community in the Bay Area.

San Francisco Bonfire Sessions
This weekend will see the final installment of the Jansport Bonfire Sessions, free outdoor concerts that are designed to bring music fans, bands, and a big bonfire all together for one unforgettable event. The lineup has a unique San Francisco flavor with performances by Geographer, White Fence, The Dodos, and a special performance by Father John Misty. The event is free but RSVP is required.
