Local drag superstar Mica Sigourney (or you might know him as his fabulous drag persona Vivvyanne ForeverMORE) is more than meets the eye. Apart from his normal performances in bars and clubs around town, he also runs the weekly art and drag dance party SOME THING at The Stud Bar, and creates new opportunities or himself and other queens by pursuing grants and pushing boundaries.
In recent years Mica has perpetuated the idea that drag is a folk art and curated more than one drag art show including the yearly Work MORE! The latest rendition of the show happened earlier this year at the SoMArts gallery where San Francisco drag performers were paired with non-drag fine artists for an exhibition of collaborative installations and performances. The exhibition focused on the link between drag and folk art, and celebrated the old-fashioned tradition of the "drag family." Atendees admired icons of famous local queens', do-it-yourself drag faces, as well as embroidered family trees of two of the drag houses represented.
As always, Mica has something big in the works. Here he answers seven essential questions about his life in the city.
What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your 'hood?
I live on the SoMa/downtown border. I’m truly a Mission/SoMa kinda kid. While sometimes I want a quieter street and bigger parks, my neighborhood feels like a city – which is why I live in a city.
What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?
It changes all the time. Super nachos are a guilty pleasure, especially from Pancho Villa on 16th. But the chicken mole at Papalote is a close second, and an order of Springs (sweet potato fried and onion rings) from Pearl’s is killer.
What's your perfect night on the town?
Cocktails at Blackbird (leather bound book is my favorite even though its off menu), then making out in the glass elevators at the St Francis, then take in a drag show, followed by dancing at one of the many dance floors to choose from. Though of course it's all about the company you keep, I’d be happy walking down the Embarcadero talking economics, or riding my bike to Bernal for a full moon ritual, depending on the partner in crime.
When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?
The gym. Truly, I go to the gym and turn up the volume on my headphones. Nothing gets me pumping iron like Terry Gross or Ira Glass breathily telling me more about the world.
What's your favorite place to go on a day trip from the city?
Guerneville. Hands down. It’s close, and weird, and gayish. And the river is nice to float in during the day or night.
