In Stinson Beach, San Francisco-based Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects, designed a luxury home to accommodate the owner's passion for art and the outdoors.
The whole house looks like a contemporary art gallery: In the living room, the walls are covered with paintings by Jenny Robinson, a local artist; pieces by James Grant, a Los Angeles–based sculptor; and Kim Curtis, a San Francisco-born painter who now lives in Illinois. The interiors, designed by Mill Valley-based Cleaveland and Kennedy Design, highlight the refined taste of the owner for this beautiful retreat.
"When we started to work on this project, we tried to satisfy the owner's request to decorate the house with natural fabrics and a preference for locally made objects," says Jody Kennedy, cofounder of Cleveland & Kennedy Design. The house displays many products made by local artisans, such as the custom felted-wool rugs from Peace Industryor the pillows on the sofa designed by Cleaveland and Kennedy. Two Siemon & Salazar orb pendants hang above a live-edge dining table made by Original Timber, a company based in Oakland.
The house is mainly used as a family weekend getaway. "They all like to cook, so the kitchen area and the living room is one open floor space where they can spend time together and entertain themselves inside as well as outside," says architect Mary Griffin.
With views on the north of the rolling hills of Marin and Stinson's Seadrift Lagoon to the south, the outdoor space has everything you need to host a party, from a barbecue grill to a hot tub. "The intention of the whole project was to take the advantage of the landscape. It has a butterfly roof which tips up to the south to catch the southern light, and tips up to the north to catch the view," says Griffin. The structure has some midcentury influences, as you can see from the simplicity of the shape. Moreover, you can detect shades of Sea Ranch here, one of the signature styles of TGH Architects for its materiality and in the minimal intrusion into the environment. The exterior of the house is clad in cedar with metal windows and doors. "The idea was to use natural materials to reinforce the surroundings," says Griffin.
