The Bay Area Wellness Guide: Telehealth, Self-Care, Fitness + Healthy Eats for the COVID-19 Era

By

Number-one priority right now: our health.

The Bay Area has always been wellness-minded, but now, in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic, we find ourselves more conscious than ever of how we treat our bodies, from the food and vitamins we put in, to how frequently we exercise, to whatever the plan might be should we need a Covid-19 screening. We've revamped our annual wellness guide to highlight new telehealth and virtual wellness options, and have also added new sections for coronavirus testing as well as at-home self-care to make up for those massages, acupuncture, and more that you can't currently get IRL.

Here you'll find online doctor appointments for everything including primary care, women's health, and even vets; virtual workouts; healthy food delivery options; supplements; home massage tools; even remote reiki!

Remember to wear your mask during essential errands out in public—we've rounded up masks by Bay Area designers so you can support local makers while also keeping safe. Plus, bookmark our special guide to sheltering in place for ways you can help the community and more resources for staying informed and entertained.

Stay home, stay safe, and be well.

Bay Area Telehealth: Women's Care, Energy Healing, Integrative Medicine + More

While you can still get special dentist, doctor, or chiropractic care while shelter-in-place is in effect, your routine and voluntary appointments are going to look a little different. In a bid to flatten the curve by reducing in-person interaction between healthcare providers and patients, the CDC is urging medical professionals to postpone elective procedures, replace all non-essential appointments with telehealth options—think video visits, real-time messaging with doctors, hotlines, and interactive surveys—and limit physical appointments and procedures to medical emergencies. Rest assured that if you need assistance, doctors around the Bay Area are working tirelessly to provide patients with the quality of care they're used to—from the safety of their homes, or in person if necessary.

Chiropractic

Although a Zoom chiropractic session isn't entirely possible, SF Custom Chiropractic's virtual ergonomic assessments ($80) and consultations ($60) are based on your health history and musculoskeletal condition and include customized exercises, stretches and workstation adjustments to help keep you pain-free while you work from home. // With in-office appointments only for essential services, doctors at Azzolino Chiropractic Neurology & Integrative Wellness are providing remote spinal care programs plus telehealth consultations for immune and respiratory health support, tincture customization, lab reviews, and recommendations. You can also grab immune-boosting supplements and vitamins for curbside pickup; appointments can be made online.

Dental

In accordance with the American Dental Association's recommendation, most Bay Area dentist offices have postponed all elective procedures and appointments—including routine cleanings. San Francisco offices including Dr. Daniel D. Barry, III and UCSF Dental Center clinics, plus Berkeley's Transcendentist—known as the "very first green dentist in the country" for its holistic practices and sustainable, nontoxic materials—are still seeing patients with urgent and emergency dental needs.

Dermatology

While in-person cosmetic services are on hold at Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology, you can still check in with Dr. Kathleen Welsh and her fellow providers via virtual consultations scheduled through the website.

Energy Healing

During her one-hour Distance Healing Activation Session ($122), reiki and crystal therapy specialist Tanya Corona will lead you through a chakra-aligning guided meditation. Takeaway exercises and meditations will help you continue to activate your life purpose post-session. // Shaman and Vibrant Reiki founder Anna Dorian will help you heal physically, mentally, and emotionally and navigate challenges in your life with an hour-long distant reiki session ($99) or two-hour Shaman's Choice phone call ($250). If you're hoping to learn more about the history and techniques of reiki—and have some extra time on your hands—Vibrant Reiki's two-day training classes are available online for now.

Integrative Medicine

UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine blends conventional and complementary approaches from around the world to provide patients with treatments including massage therapy, Chinese medicine, and biofeedback sessions, plus educational opportunities. During the coronavirus pandemic, however, all visits are being conducted via video or phone, and public classes are canceled for now. // Functional medicine clinic Parsley Health gets cred for its cutting-edge style of data-driven preventative medicine. Parsley offers a 90-minute initial intake appointment plus regular check-ups with an on-staff health coach. Member services include precision testing, stress management, 24/7 access to medical records, and even online COVID-19 screenings. Online messaging and virtual doctor and health coach visits are always available—a Complete Care plan ($150/month) includes five appointments per year. Want to try before you buy? Schedule a 30-minute checkup with a doc for $95. // Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz, founder of Anatara Medicinein Pacific Heights, is an expert if treating late-stage Lyme disease and cancer with various IV therapies, multi-pass ozone, and low-dose chemotherapy, as well as naturopathic, regenerative, and genomic medicines. Currently, he is providing COVID-19 facts and recommendations for limiting exposure through articles and YouTube videos.

Primary Care

Whether you're dealing with lingering shoulder pain, insomnia, or have a kid with a rash, you shouldn't need to put off a doctor's appointment because of social distancing or fear of contracting COVID-19. That's where One Medical's new remote visits come in. Like regular office visits, these scheduled appointments allow you to meet with a provider over video from the comfort and safety of your own home. Remote visits start at a pre-scheduled time, so you know exactly when the appointment will start, and are billed to insurance just like in-person appointments.

Thank you to our partners at One Medical.

Women's Health

Don't let your birth control lapse because you're sheltered in place. Pandia Health offers free delivery on birth control pills at a $0 copay with most insurances or as low as $15 per pack for patients without insurance. Transfer an active prescription or get a new one after a doctor reviews your health history. // Women in midlife can also get menopause care the modern way with The Cusp. Care begins with a 30- to 45-minute video visit with a menopause specialist or OB-GYN (from UCSF, Kaiser, Harvard, and more), followed by a customized treatment plan that might include natural supplements, lifestyle recommendations, and prescriptions. You can track your symptoms daily, and text with your health care team via the mobile app between visits. // In 2019, Marin-based artist and breast cancer survivor Keira Kotler launched Everviolet, a line of beautiful lingerie designed specifically for women in various stages of treatment. During the coronavirus pandemic, Everviolet is shifting gears to provide much-needed inspiring content and resources for women, including curated meditation apps, advice for self-care and connection, online fitness classes, and more. Follow Everviolet on Instagram or sign up for their newsletter to get uplifting blog content right in your inbox.

Veterinary

Dr. Araba Oglesby of Blue Sparrow Holistic Veterinary House Calls emphasizes a blend of Western and traditional Chinese veterinary practices—and you don't even have to take your quivering pup to the vet. During shelter in place, Dr. Oglesby is still offering preventative and wellness care through acupuncture, herbs, and nutrition, and taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of clients and vets. // San Francisco Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital provides both Western-style and holistic care, plus massage therapy to keep Fido in tip-top shape. Limited services including technician appointments for essential treatments, urgent care, and medication are still available.

Hospitals and COVID-19 Screenings in the Bay Area

People experiencing severe symptoms, including shortness of breath, should take precautionary measures and may need to go to the hospital or see a doctor in person, but if you're experiencing non-life threatening symptoms, you can check your symptoms and get COVID-19 screenings online while sheltering in place. The CDC's self-checker helps guide you through symptoms, risk factors, and next steps should you get ill. // San Francisco–based HeyDoctor is providing free, online COVID-19 screenings; additionally, their online services include doctor visits and prescriptions for UTIs, birth control, smoking cessation, pre-diabetes testing, and more.

UCSF is working to simultaneously respond to the COVID-19 crisis and provide care for regular patients. While elective procedures have not been canceled, non-urgent procedures may be rescheduled and in-person appointments may be converted to video visits. Those visiting the hospital for visits can rest assured that UCSF's infection prevention practices and symptom screenings will ensure patient and employee safety. If you have symptoms or questions about COVID-19, consult UCSF's Coronavirus resources and FAQ, call the UCSF Coronavirus information line (415-514-7328), or contact your health care provider directly. // Within two hours of completing an e-visit, Kaiser Permanente will provide members with possible COVID-19 symptoms with online advice and next steps or advice by phone (866-454-8855). Emergency services are still open 24/7 and in-person care is available, but to support social distancing, Kaiser is encouraging members to reschedule routine appointments, or book phone or video appointments instead. // Sutter Health patients with non-urgent concerns can book same day video visits with a clinician between 8am and 8pm. Additionally, those seeking coronavirus recommendations or information can call their COVID-19 Advice Line (866-961-2889). // One Medical has expanded its COVID-19 testing services to the general public with drive-through testing sites in SF's Laurel Heights, San Rafael, and Sunnyvale. Anyone in the Bay Area with coronavirus concerns can sign up for access to One Medical's virtual care and testing services by using promo code: GETCARE30. Once enrolled, a patient will download the One Medical app and tap "COVID-19 Symptoms?" to share information about symptoms with a provider. The One Medical clinical team will get in touch with guidance on next steps, which may be a video chat, or booking a testing appointment.
