Five New Cafés to Check Out

You'd think San Francisco is trying to have a café on each block or something with all these new openings every month. (Not like we're complaining.) Here's your recap of five new cafés that have recently joined our local caffeine scene.

Cafe St. Jorge

Out in Bernal, swing by this spot for a little taste of Portugal. Owner Andrea de Francisco serves Stumptown Coffee along with her Portuguese treats (hello pasteis de nata!), plus sandwiches and other savory items (it's an appealing menu). Open Mon–Wed 7am–3:30pm, Thu–Sat 7am–8pm, Sun 8am–3:30pm. 3438 Mission St. at Kingston, 415-814-2028.

Coffee Cultures

Now open in the Financial District is this cool café from Jason Paul (previously at Coffee Bar), serving North Carolina–based Counter Culture Coffee (the first place in SF to serve it). You can also score oatmeal for breakfast, frozen yogurt, sandwiches, and more. (Yup, they have you covered.) Mon–Fri 6am–6pm. 225 Bush St. at Montgomery, 415-788-7011.

Iron & Steam Espresso Bar

This newly opened espresso bar is nestled in front of the Hi-Lo Club on Polk Street (see, they can get you drunk and then help with your hangover the next day). The gleaming vintage Gaggia lever machine is pulling shots of Chromatic Coffee (from San Jose). Look for some breakfast pastries in coming weeks, too. Tue–Fri 8:30am–3:30pm, Sat–Sun 9am–3:30pm, Monday hours coming soon. 1423 Polk St. at Pine.

Public Bikes / Saint Frank Coffee

Another pop-up is this woodsy coffee kiosk in front of the Public Bikes store in South Park. You can come by for espresso drinks from Saint Frank Coffee (AKA Kevin "Tex" Bohlin), who is an alum of Ritual and is gunning to open his own shop on Polk Street in August. Mon–Sat 8am–4pm. 123 South Park at Center.

Tierra Mia Coffee

Here’s your chance to check out the first SF location of this Los Angeles import (they roast their own beans). While you can get your standard coffee drinks, you go next level and try their Latin-inspired beverages, like a cafecito Cubano, a Cubano con leche, or horchata frappé. Open 6:30am–10pm daily. 3188 Mission St. at Valencia.
