If you want to know which flowers are considered an aphrodisiac or you're dying to meet Tommy Chong, check out these local events over the three-day weekend.
Get in the Mood
What: Eschew the traditional Valentine's Day' bouquet and take your partner to this rather steamy event at the Conservatory of Flowers. They're hosting a special after-hours event in celebration of the libido-enhancing power of plants. Learn which flowers are aphrodisiacs, smell and sample spices that are rumored to perk up more than just a meal, and enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne. There will also be three specially created and stimulating cocktails served at the cash bar. Tickets are $20 per person, but if you order before midnight on February 12th, you can get two for $35. (The event is 21+, so bring your ID).
When: February 14, 5:30 to 8:00pm
Where: The Conservatory of Flowers: 100 John F Kennedy Drive (Golden Gate Park); Get tickets here.
Up In Smoke
International Cannabis Business Conference
What: Former US Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders is coming to town, and she's bringing Tommy Chong (of Cheech and Chong), Arjan Roskam (creator of the Strain Hunters documentary series), and Anthony Johnson (executive director of Oregon's very successful campaign to legalize marijuana) with her. They will be leading a conference about the current state of marijuana legalization in California. Frankly, we might go just to meet Tommy Chong. Tickets start at $599 and are selling out fast!
When: February 13th, 9:30 am - February 14th, 5:00 pm
Where: Hyatt Regency: 5 Embarcadero Center (Embarcadero); Get tickets here.
The American Dream(er)
Dennis Hopper Behind the Scenes
What: It's the documentary you always wished existed, especially if you're a Dennis Hopper fan. The film follows Hopper right after he wrapped the movie Easy Rider (maybe you've heard of it?) and exposes another side to him: the visionary, the artist, and the eccentric. Enjoy this cinematic gem, and gain some insight to one of Hollywood's truest radicals. Tickets are $14 and available here.
When: February 11th, viewings at 6:20 and 9:20 pm.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema: 2550 Mission St (Mission); Get tickets here.
Surf's Up!
What: The world's premier surf contest is taking place at Pillar Point this weekend, and the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is taking on hosting duties. Along with a special brunch menu (being offered until 3pm), they'll also be setting up big screen TVs in the bar, restaurant, and Mavericks Beer Garden, so you won't miss a second of the invitational. Surf's up dudes, better take advantage of this bodacious offer!
When: February 12th, 8:00am
Where: Half Moon Bay Brewing Co: 390 Capistrano Road (Half Moon Bay); hmbbrewingco.com
Writing Love on the Wall
Love Wall at Jack London Square
What: In recognition of our favorite loved-up holiday, Jack London Square has a brand new 'Love Wall' on the Oakland waterfront. Take a cue from the famous lock bridges of Europe, and write a message of love on a tag (available from most local businesses) and 'lock' it up with a zip tie to a portion of the waterfront railing. It's a really sweet stop on your Valentine's Day tour of Oakland.
When: The whole month of February.
Where: Jack London Square (Oakland).
