That annual environmental education event known as the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival sets up camp in the Village at Squaw Valley on Saturday, April 21.

The celebration, which takes place from 11 am to 5 pm and is open to the public, is a community-sponsored event that gives participants an opportunity to learn about recycling and composting, alternative energy, sustainability, watershed and forest health and reducing ecological footprints.

The theme of this zero waste event – all trash and food vendor byproducts will be recycled or composted – is Do One Thing, which asks participants to consider and implement their pledge to help the environment and cool the climate.

Among the Festival attractions are the Dr. Wilderness Show, a puppet-magic-singing-dancing revue for kids of all ages that spotlights contemporary environmental issues; live music from Ten Mile Tide, an acoustic rock band from San Francisco, and Drop Theory, a local funk-fusion band; the Envirolution Trashion Show, which features Truckee High School students modeling outfits made out of materials that are not easily biodegradable; a children's activity area, and free community recycling collection area (electronics, tires and household batteries will be accepted, but no hazardous waste).

There will also be a continuous raffle, with prizes including Squaw Valley season passes, gift cards, gym and yoga memberships and lodging at various local resorts.
