It's time to close the casket on the eighth Another Hole in the Head Festival, IndieFest's annual celebration of horror and the occult, and how better to do it than with the mortifying savagery of Philip Gelatt's The Bleeding House, Calvin Lee Reeder's Sundance oddity The Oregonian, and the Bay Area debut of Grave Encounters, the first feature offering from so-called "Vicious Brothers" Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz?
House follows the messy downfall of the Smith family, a reclusive clan burdened by a terrible, long-kept secret, whose abrupt comeuppance arrives in the form of a genial Southerner (Patrick Breen, of Galaxy Quest) with a sadistic streak. Reeder's Oregonian, which premiered at this year's Sundance Festival and has since been deemed a potential risk for the seizure-prone, follows one woman's descent into psychosis in the aftermath of a car wreck.
For fans of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, there's Encounters, in which a TV reality show set in a supposedly haunted psych ward takes an unexpected turn into the macabre. ("Prepare to lose some sleep," warns San Francisco Film Society member Mike Skurko.) IndieFest's trio of chillers arrive Thursday at the Roxie, with the festival's Closing Night Party scheduled Friday night at Terra on Harrison Street. For more information, click here.
