SF Symphony Opening Night Gala Kicks Off Season with a Bang

By

Think the symphony can’t be raucous? Think again. Beloved music Director Michael Tilson Thomas celebrated his 20th year with the orchestra at Wednesday’s SF Symphony Opening Night Gala, and he kicked off the evening with signature gusto. Tchaikovsky’sRomeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture primed the crowd before guest appearances by pianist Yuja Wang, who nearly sprung from her appropriately hued sequin and mesh dress during her performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and legendary singer-songwriter, Marin resident, and symphony regular Bonnie Raitt, who lent her soulful voice to playful American songs. The performance ended with explosive applause and a curtain of balloons falling from the ceiling before guests headed to the after party. SF’s fashion plates were out in full force, including Vanessa Getty, Marissa Mayer, Joy Bianchi, even an appearance from LA resident Nicky Hilton, who’s in town promoting her new book, 365 Style
