The Sculptural Bling of Matthew Campbell Laurenza

By

If something sparkly dangling from the wrists or lobes of Rihanna, Alexa Chung, Blake Lively or Carrie Underwood has caught your eye lately, we wouldn’t at all be surprised to find that the dazzler in question was none other than an enamel- and jewel-encrusted piece by New York-based designer Matthew Campbell Laurenza’s M.C.L. Design.

In town tomorrow for a personal appearance at Neiman Marcus, the 32-year-old Laurenza has garnered many a starlet fan since launching in 2007. Best known for chunky bangles and cuffs mixing enamel and multi-colored sapphires, Laurenza can be counted on for pieces that make a statement with their intricate design work and bold hues.

I try to use all the same elements as sculpture,” says Laurenza, who has a background in architecture, interior design and sculpture. “Basically each piece is kind of a puzzle. I have a lot of little puzzles in my head, and when I get a quiet time, I put the shape down on paper, and then I start looking for design elements or embellishments.”

Pieces range from $250 for a pearl and sapphire ring to $2,300 for a sapphire-adorned cuff. Purchase one of Laurenza’s haute baubles from the marine-inspired St. Tropez collection, and he’ll donated a portion of the proceeds to Project Kaisei and its efforts to raise awareness about the massive “Plastic Vortex” of debris collecting in the Pacific Ocean.

Meet Matthew Campbell Laurenza of M.C.L. Design at Neiman Marcus (150 Stockton St., SF) tomorrow between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the first floor.
