Tips on How to Survive a Depression from Paul Madonna and Your Grandma
Ever seen that Seinfeld episode where Jerry's Uncle Leo gets caught stealing batteries? The comedian then realizes that world is rife with old people who also happen to be petty-theft masterminds. Perhaps living through the Great Depression made some of those old birds pretty wily. While we don't condone theft of any kind, we think everyone could learn a thing or two from Paul Madonna's new art show, "Things Your Grandmother Taught You to Steal to Survive a Depression". If Madonna's dry wit and pen and ink drawings look familiar, they should - he has been drawing the weekly strip All Over Coffee for the Chron for over five years now. This solo show, however, is an artistic record of "free" items Madonna has collected from restaurants around town, such as soy sauce packets, toothpicks, honey packets, and a lot more. Is it stealing? We'll let you be the judge, but we can say it is most definitely entertaining. Paul Madonna's "Things Your Grandmother Taught You to Steal to Survive a Depression" is up now at BellJar, with the official opening going down this Friday (the 22nd) from 6 to 9PM.
