This Week's Top Food Events: Magic Curry Kart, Cowgirl Creamery and Pisco Tasting

By

Manioc Maniac
Slow Food San Francisco will be screening “Mr. Bene Goes To Italy” on Saturday, April 4 at the Delancey Street Theatre. The film, a favorite of Slow Food founder Carlo Petrini, follows the journey of Benedito Batista da Silva, an authority on manioc flour production in the Brazilian Pará State (leave it to Slow Food to find something obscure!). The screening is followed by a reception; tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.

Street Eats
The Mission is abuzz with some new street food ventures—look for Amuse-Bouche at the 24th Street BART station weekday mornings, where a friendly Frenchman is selling Dixie cups of chai and miniature pastries, conveniently packed into a little egg crate, for $1. We’ve also been hearing about the late-night Magic Curry Kart, the owner of which is savvy enough to have started tweeting about his whereabouts. Pining for Pinot
Our very own wine and spirits editor, Jordan Mackay and his co-authors will be at Omnivore Books on April 4 from 2 to 3 p.m. to discuss their new book, Passion for Pinot. Join him for the talk and a glass of fine wine. No reservations required, and the event is free!

The One-Two Pisco Punch
In the mood for a little Peruvian firewater? La Mar is hosting Barsol founder Diego Loret De Mola on April 6—he’ll lead a guided tasting of Peru’s national spirit, Pisco, followed by a reception featuring pisco cocktails and Peruvian snacks. The event is free; tasting is 2:30 to 4 p.m. with the reception to follow from 4 to 5 p.m..

Nice To Meet You, Chef

On April 6 the City Club will be hosting a “Chefs to Know” dinner in conjunction with the release of a Starchefs.com book of the same name. The five-course meal will be prepared by five of the city’s best chefs, including Stuart Brioza and Nicole Kransinski, formerly of Rubicon, Richard Corbo, chef of Ducca, Mark Dommen of One Market and token New Yorker, Noriyuki Sugie, formerly of Asiate. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. and the cost is $175, which includes dinner, wine, tax and service, as well as a copy of the book, signed by all the chefs. To book your seat, call 415-362-6697 or email michelle.kimmins@cityclubsf.com.

Spit Shined

Sausalito gem Poggio Trattoria will be serving a week of Spiedo Misto della Pasqua—spit-roasted meats offered in celebration of spring and the Easter holiday. From April 7 through April 11 they’ll be roasting rabbit, pig, goat and game hens over a wood fire, and serving these treats with polenta and Tuscan-style beans. The cost for such a feast? $19 per person. Make your reservation now by calling 415-332-7771.

Milk Maids

If you are a cheese lover, it’s time to learn from the masters. On April 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Cowgirl Creamery owners Peggy Smith and Sue Conley will lead a cheese tasting at Cavallo Point. Sample seven different cheeses and learn how to create the perfect pairings and platters, all for $65. To reserve your spot, call 415-651-2003.
