San Franciso Street Style Dubbed "The Land That Style Forgot"

San Francisco walks to the beat of its own fashion drum. We know this, but others, like Guy Trebay from The New York Times, describes our beloved foggy city as “the land that style forgot." A harsh, yet catching opener in his somewhat controversial article describing our truly eclectic sense of fashion.

Upon investigating our city, Trebay talks to locals and learns about our own — loosely termed — fashion “tribes”: the Mission tribe, the Haight tribe, the Castro tribe, and the Pacific Heights tribe. However, like the true San Franciscans we are, there are no strict boundaries in these fashion clans — a girl in the Mission won’t get shot down for donning a Longchamp bag — unlike similar fashion groupings set forth in the East Coast.

Most notably, Trebay points out our incredible knack for mixing together designer duds with low-end pieces along with our non-stigmatized view on re-using. He calls out local consignment hot spot, Sui Generis as, “A consignment store run as if by museum curators, Sui Generis sells a selection of vintage clothing (Frankie Goes to Hollywood T-shirts alongside John Lobb shoes and suits from Comme des Garçons) so smartly merchandised that a consumer quickly forgets that the stuff on display is used goods."

Not that we don’t ever run to Barneys to pick up those coveted YSL booties that just came out, we just pride ourselves in making conscious, fashion-forward decisions and of course, finding that rare designer deal. And yeah, we have no qualms with pairing a two dollar dress with a Proenza Schouler bag — and are proud of it.

I think these pictures are NOT representative of SF at all. You clearly think that the Mission = all of SF. Where are the pics of the normal people I see everyday in the financial district and South Beach? Those girls look terrible. I was born and raised in SF and I am insulted by this article and the pictures you chose :(

I am a SF native and I say this... We are not slaves to the fashion trends. We create our own style and let the style be dictated by who WE are! We don't let the fads and trends dictate what we wear. We wear what WE LIKE! I always look good because I LOVE who I am. Fashion is not an insecurity that I always have to buy into.. My favorite pants are a vintage pair of Levi's 501 jeans my grandpa gave me. No one will ever tell me that this is not fashionable.

I LOVE SF!

I am from Brooklyn and stumbled across this. I have family in the SF Bay Area, namely San Francisco and Oakland. I love their sense of fashion and style. They are fashion forward and fashion backward, and never seem to stress over style, but they always look good. They are very fashionable and rep the SF Bay Area (they are musicians.) When they roll here to Brooklyn they are always commented on their smooth sense of fashion. I agree with this ... SF has many pockets of fashion and in those pockets the fashion is different all over the city.

I moved here from NY this year and love the Bay Area so this is from someone who likes it better here. However, y'all dress like crap. Combining things that don't go together at all is not stylish and it's not a protest statement, it's just lazy. And getting dressed nicely is not selling out to the Man, it's dressing nicely.

sexy boy in the middle is my hero, he designs for some very reputable companies and loves coffee and seinfeld. ladies, get at him!

Style didn't forget San Francisco, most San Franciscans forgot style. The "dudes" are generic their ill fitting jeans and trousers, sloppy (and often dirty) t-shirts, and drab as hell jackets. When style tries to happen, there is always something quirky alright, but it's bad - like a pair of skinny jeans that looks like hell on the guy. And the women? Well, do men really like skank walking, shopping, eating and doing anything in their skanky yoga pants. Does any woman in San Francisco own a hair brush?
And in all of our gray skies - all you see is black, black and more black - then throw in some more gray.
There is NOTHING stylish in about 98% of San Franciscans!!

The woman on the left is Jess Brillhart, a very-Googleable New York based filmmaker who is wearing styles bought in Brooklyn. She was there visiting. The chap in the middle was also visiting, but from 1996 New York. Nice try, SF. Stay classy.

Not only is it old news, but it's true old news. This is a city of quirk much more than style. Yes there are some stylish cats here, but the same could be said of hip neighborhoods in Cincinnati.

Dude, this NYT article ran, like, weeks ago.
