Scenes of the City: Gardens of Alcatraz
We recently visited infamous Alcatraz Island, but not for the reason most people make the ferry trip. The island is blanketed with gardens and plants that were planted by prisoners, officers and their families when it was a federal penitentiary. Many of these plants flourished through four decades of neglect that followed the prison’s closing.
Much remediation work has been done in the past decade from when the Garden Conservancy and the Golden Gate Park National Parks Conservancy formed a partnership with the National Park Service to restore and maintain the gardens on Alcatraz.
