Big Hanukkah Happenings

By

Christmas everything is about to hit big time. But for a good majority of us, Santa Claus is NOT coming to town. This year, thankfully, the Hub at SF's Jewish Community Center is throwing it down for the Jews. The Super 8 Hanukkah Festival: Eight Ways to Burn Bright is a weeklong celebration of the other holiday with food, film, music, comedy, survival kits, and more.

Starting December 1, you can ease into the first night of Hanukkah with a little comedy. The musical comedy duo Good for the Jews will be performing at Cafe du Nord. Think of them as the Kosher counterpart to Flight of the Concords. The following night Japantown's New People is hosting the 8x8x8 film fest, where you'll get a sampling of Shmaltz brews and Dynamo Donut snacks with your eight short films selected from the SF Jewish Film Festival.

On Sunday, The Women's Building in the Mission will host Guilt-free Gelt, a holiday gift bazaar that's ethical, green, and just featuring local DIY artists and a sweat-free fashion show. And on the last night of Hanukkah, you'll be ready to party at Bollyhood Cafe for the free Milk + Honey gig with live DJ mash-ups and open bar for the first hour. For once in your life, get there early.

If that's not enough, you can also enjoy Humphry Slocombe's special Hanukkah ice cream blends like sour cream and apple sauce, plus a Sufganiyot sundae (Meyer lemon Dynamo donut with Manischewitz sorbet!), available all week. Last but not least, the Hub is promising a kit of all Hanukkah essentials at each Super 8 event. It's under wraps exactly what you'll get, but we're guessing it will include matzo ball and latke recipes, a Dynamo coconut cream-filled donut, and maybe even a mini menorah.

All events are open to the public at various venues, so even if gefilte fish isn't part of your holiday tradition, you're still welcome to join in on the fun.
