*UPDATE Sept. 15, 2020: On Monday, Off the Grid announced a totally unsurprising yet still delightful update: OTG will be the official concessions purveyor for Fort Mason Flix. Movie popcorn, nachos, and candy will be available in addition to eats from rotating vendors including Al Pastor Papi, Bacon Bacon, Hula Truck, Southern Comfort Kitchen, and Capelo's BBQ. While tickets to September shows sold out in a hot minute, the October lineup and tix are scheduled to be released this week.

We got a little excited about the (fake) news last month that San Francisco was getting a floating cinema, but we're more than happy to settle for a drive-in movie theater right on SF Bay.

Drive-in theaters are surging in popularity around the world during Covid-19, and the city will finally have one of our own, at least for a little bit. On September 18th, Fort Mason Flix will launch as a month-long pandemic-friendly pop-up with a picturesque backdrop to boot.

The movie lineup will include both current and throwback films for every sort of movie fanatic. Family-friendly favorites will include Minions (on opening day), Frozen, and The Lion King, while you musical types can sing along as loud as you like from the privacy of your own car during Hairspray, Xanadu, and Purple Rain. In the mood for some action? Grab tickets to The Matrix or Mad Max: Fury Road.

The outdoor theater will also host screenings in partnership with local nonprofits and film festivals—look out for Intersection for the Arts' Loud Cinema on October 1st, an evening of experimental short films and modern scores with 50 percent of proceeds benefiting TGI Justice Project.

Grab your quarantine pod—one ticket covers as many people as you can legally fit into your car—and choose from 6pm and 9pm showings six days each week. Or, make an evening of it and snag tickets to back-to-back films. You can arrive up to one hour early and claim your spot on a first come basis (taller vehicles must park in the back), then turn on your FM stereo and munch on concession snacks. A 40-by-20-foot high-def LED screen ensures ideal movie watching both pre and post sunset—it's even 90 times brighter than a normal movie theater projector.

Rest assured that Covid-era safety precautions are in place, including online ticket sales, contactless check-in and concessions, six-foot distance between vehicles, ample cleaning, and a mask requirement while you're outside your car.
