Rock and Walk Oakland Urban Paths is one of those awesome local organizations that makes me want to brag about living in Oakland. The group hosts free walks through some of Oakland's great and often little known (or appreciated) paths and hidden stairways, and provides maps of these gems on its website. This weekend, geologist Andrew Alden will be taking folks on a walk along the Hayward fault to explore some of Oakland's geology.

Owl N Wood From the folks who brought us the wonderful Guerilla Cafe in Berkeley comes Owl n Wood, your new favorite Oakland store. Owner and designer Rachel Konte has said she wants the store to draw influence from her Afro-Scandinavian roots, and it delivers, offering a blend of Danish and American design from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Featuring a mix of vintage and new, local and international clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories, the store has something for every cool person you know.

Sketch Ice Cream The much-missed Berkeley ice cream shop is back! Sketch was a pioneer in the whole artisan ice cream trend and now it's back, serving up its organic, Straus Creamery milk-based soft serve in fresh, seasonal flavors at a brand new shop near Fourth Street.
