Point Reyes Open Studios

What: The epic and oh-so-very relaxed coastal beauty of Point Reyes—located 35 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge—reveals yet another dimension to be appreciated when the ceramicists, photographers, sculptors, painters, printmakers, and other local artists who live and work there open their studio doors for a single spring weekend.

Why: Support local artists while enjoying the natural beauty of the Point Reyes wilderness.

When: Memorial Day Weekend: May 23, 24, and 25 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Who: Among the approximately 20 participants are Lina Prairie and her hand-woven kelp baskets that somehow seem to capture the turbulence of nature; the simple grace of Joyce Laws’ plein air painting; Jack Soman’s poetic abstracts and whimsical metal fantasies, and the expressive, vividly alive woodcut prints from Sirima Sataman.

Where: Studios surrounding Tomales Bay, map here. Free admission.

San Francisco International Arts Festival

What: Enjoy the work of dozens of dance, music, theater, and visual artists during this three week festival. Bay Area artists and their international collaborators present projects focused on international recognition and understanding.

Why: A talented global community presents their diverse array of work on the beautiful Presidio.

When: The festival kicks off on Thursday, May 21 and continues through Sunday, June 7.

Who: Artists such Jesus Diaz, the agora project and Carte Blanche. Full listing here.

Where: The festival is housed at the Fort Mason Center at 2 Marina Blvd. Find the schedule and location of specific events here

SHOP

San Francisco Sidewalk Sale

What: San Francisco's Small Business Week wraps up with a full day of sidewalk sales in seven neighborhoods throughout the city. Visit the Castro, Polk Street, Mission Creek, Noriega Street, Noe Valley, Mission Bernal, or Taraval Street to find gifts, clothes, books, and more produced by local merchants.

Why: Support locally owned companies and find that gift you've been looking for.

When: Saturday, May 23.

Where: On the sidewalk on your way to brunch or along your dog-walking route.

RUN

Golden Gate Bridge Fun Run

What: Join Sports Basement in a morning run across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Why: If you're going to run, you might as well do it across one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Bonus: the jog ends at Off the Grid: Picnic at the Presidio, so you can refuel with eggs Benedict from Benedict Arnold's or creme brûlée from the Creme Brûlée Cart.

When: Sunday, May 24 at 9 a.m.

Where: The run begins at the Sports Basement in the Presidio, located at 610 Old Mason Street.
