Away They Go: Junot Diaz And Dave Eggers In Conversation

By

Not far from the hopping cultural crossroads of 16th and Valencia, Intersection for the Arts has been making a name for itself for decades as another kind of meeting place -- and the site of riveting collaborations with literary heavyweights such as Denis Johnson, stage productions like the fierce, hip-hop-laced Angry Black White Boy, and such ambitious interdisciplinary endeavors as the Prison Project.

Still, it takes support to keep the oldest alternative arts nonprofit in the Bay happening. That’s why authors Junot Diaz and Dave Eggers will be gabbing in honor of Intersection for the Arts on June 27 at Glide Memorial Church. The pair will talk about their fiction, short stories, and their work with Intersection and resident company Campo Santo.

It’s an exciting time for both writers: Diaz recently made a splash locally with the world premiere of Fukú Americanus, the stage incarnation of his best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, now extended through July 5 at Intersection, and Bay Area author Eggers recently saw his screenwriting collaboration with wife Vendela Vida, Away We Go -- a witty and heartfelt paean to a young couple in search of a place to call home -- open to warm reviews. Could this event get any more compelling? Yep, Intersection and Campo Santo will also present a live excerpt of Fukú Americanus, which follows the young Oscar, Lola and Yunior as they take a fukú, or cursed, journey from their ancestral homeland.

Junot Diaz and Dave Eggers in Conversation, a benefit for Intersection for the Arts, happens Saturday, June 27, 4 p.m., at Glide Memorial Church Sanctuary, 330 Ellis St., S.F. $20-$50 sliding scale. (415) 626-2787, ext. 109. www.theintersection.orgwww.brownpapertickets.com/event/70367.

Fukú Americanus runs through July 5. Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m., at Intersection for the Arts, 446 Valencia St., S.F. $15-$25 sliding scale (Thursdays are Pay-What-You-Can). (415) 626-2787, ext. 109. www.theintersection.orgwww.brownpapertickets.com/event/58375.
