The high obesity rates in the city, startling lack of grocery stores, and ubiquity of unhealthy options prompted the TNDC (one of SF’s largest affordable housing developers) to start their community gardening program. The Tenderloin People’s Gardens provides over 3,000 pounds of food to over 500 residents living in affordable housing units. By partnering with Fern, the Tenderloin People’s Garden and TNDC are able to provide additional gardening supplies and help ensure the future of the garden and the vital produce it yields.
Fern delivers urban garden kits locally in the Bay Area, but they don’t stop there—they also provide support through the app via guides and the ability to ask garden experts. Order outdoor seasonal kits now, and they'll deliver seeds throughout the year when it's the right planting time for your Bay Area microclimate. Fern wants everyone, not just those with green thumbs, to be able to grow their own food and be a part of the solution for a stronger SF community. Beyond the “Buy One, Give One,” program, Fern’s moving to incorporate volunteering at community gardens and gardening workshops into the app’s experience in the future.
The “Buy a Garden, Give a Garden” program last through the end of November. fernclub.com
