America’s Cup racers may have sailed off into the sunset last weekend, but one small winegrowing region in Sonoma County is still looking out to sea. On November 8, 40 different wineries from the Dry Creek Valley appellation will be setting sail for a three-hour sunset cruise — and you’re invited.
Because it has been proven that wine tastes better when paired with a view, your tasting vessel will make its way around the bay, past all those important landmarks you’ve been meaning to get a closer look at for years now. The opportunity to taste nearly 100 different wines seems like the perfect excuse.
The Dry Creek Valley, located near the town of Healdsburg, has been home to Zinfandel since the 1870s, and while it is still be the mainstay grape (anchored by wineries like Ridge and Dry Creek Vineyards), the area has widened its scope in recent years. From Quivira’s biodynamically-farmed Sauvignon Blanc and Grenache to Mill Creek’s Gewurztraminer and Syrah, the cruise is an excellent opportunity to learn about the diversity of the region from many of the vintners themselves. And if you have any question about whether those are red or black fruits you’re tasting or how long you should age that Cabernet Sauvignon, Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson will be on hand.
Back on dry ground, you will likely find yourself planning a trip to the region itself.
Dry Creek Valley Winemaker Cruise, Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 6-9pm. Pier 3, Hornblower Landing. Tickets are available at http://drycreekvalley.eventbrite.com. Each $150 ticket ($250 for a couple), includes unlimited wine tastings and appetizers.
