Custom-built Sea Cliff beauty with Golden Gate views asks $5.2 million

The story behind this Sea Cliff home sounds a little too good be true.

Its classic Shingle style blends seamlessly into its surrounds, but modernized exterior finishes, such as a pair of rounded glass lookouts, give away the truth: The house was custom-built for contemporary life in 2001, by late architect Lewis Butler (founding partner of San Francisco–based Butler Armsden) and the highly regarded local contractors at Forde Mazzola, for the family that lives in it to this day.

Comfort plus luxury is the obvious theme in the 3,500-square-foot, four-bedroom home, which cost $1,400 per square foot to build.

Floor to ceiling windows and skylights cast a glow of natural light throughout all three levels.

At street level, a grand foyer opens to the formal living room at left, which is illuminated by one of the curved window banks that look out to the Golden Gate Bridge, and the gourmet kitchen and dining area at right via elegant open archways and crown moldings with a 19th century feel.

The kitchen is a standout space, thoughtfully designed with a rounded island, a cozy work nook, marble countertops, and pretty stainless steel appliances. The adjacent dining room has a fully equipped wet bar to keep the party flowing.

There are lovely views of the Pacific Ocean to be had from the top floor, which houses the bedrooms as well as a laundry room.

The primary suite is a tranquil escape with a wood-burning fireplace and built-in window seat; a spacious marble-clad bathroom with dual vanities, a makeup area, deep soaking tub, and walk-in shower; and a roomy closet with blond wood built-ins.

The lower level was made for entertaining and hosting guests with an additional bedroom or family room, a full bathroom, walk-in closet, wet bar, and its own laundry room. There is also a two-car garage.

The outdoors here are an oasis with a full kitchen, fire pit, a sunken hot tub, and even an outdoor shower for rinsing off after a soak or trip to Baker Beach or China Beach, which are just a few minutes away.
