Foodie Agenda: A Beer Garden Celebration, DIY Ice Cream, and More

There's possibly no greater summer pleasure than enjoying an ice cold brew outside in a beer garden. This Friday, conceptual artist Hans Winkler, Office Wiederholt, and the San Francisco Art Institute are hosting a beer garden extravaganza. Bier Sommer will explore beer gardens in the broader context of consumer and spectator culture. There will be film screenings, performances, and readings, beer coasters designed by artists, and a myriad of other beer garden paraphernalia. There will of course be plenty of beer and food on hand, including beer from Hofbräuhaus Traunstein, one of the oldest breweries in Germany. The event is free but space is limited and advance registration is recommended. From 3-9 p.m. @ The San Francisco Art Institute, 800 Chestnut Street.

Saturday, July 28

Bluxome Winery, located in the heart of SOMA, was the first new winery to open in downtown SF in over 100 years. With a passion for the finer things in life, it makes sense that they would want to celebrate the huge array of fantastic, fresh produce surrounding the Bay Area by hosting the monthly Meet Market at their winery. Packed with local farmers flogging their produce, there will be loads of stands with fresh bread, cheeses, and other locally made gourmet food. There is, of course, also plenty of wine tasting where you can sample some of Bluxome’s best varieties. The market goes from 12-5 p.m. @ Bluxome Winery 53 Bluxome Street.

One of San Francisco’s favorite events is back with a vengeance!  Drawing inspiration from outdoor markets, international bazaars, and street food culture, the SF Night Market is making a triumphant return. There will be a delicious range of local artisanal food, fantastic music provided by local DJs, poetry readings, as well as a plethora of local artists selling their art. It costs $5 to get in and the market starts at 6 p.m. @ 161 Erie Street.

Ever marvelled at boutique ice cream and wondered if you could ever make something like that yourself? Well, perhaps you can! At the DIY Ice Cream workshop you will break down the science behind achieving the perfect balance of ingredients to create a well-textured frozen dessert. Create unique blends such as Kona coffee and oatmeal stout ice cream, olive oil and sea salted pepita ice cream, as well as a vegan watermelon and lemonade sorbet. Still want more? Well, you’ll also learn how to make incredible toppings that will rival any ice cream shop in creativity and taste. The Workshop costs $46 and includes a container of chocolate sauce and caramel, as well as a mini-book full of recipes so you can create mind-blowing ice cream at home. Urban Bazaar is turning two, and to celebrate its entrance into toddlerhood, it's having a Bazaar-B-Q. This quirkily named event will be a hotbed of beer, BBQ and birthday cupcakes. Along with good food (come early in case it runs out), there are also going to be a number of free workshops throughout the day. Some of the more notable workshops are the Terrarium Making demo, where you can make your own Terrarium, a Mustache on a Stick workshop, and a fabric covered jewelry making class. The whole day is just a drop-in type affair, so come by anytime for some tasty food and learn a new skill while you’re at it. From 12-6 p.m. @ Urban Bazaar, 1371 Ninth Avenue.

It is that time of the month again where all the vegans converge upon Mission Street for the monthly Vegan Hacker class. This month, in celebration of being right in the middle of summer, you will learn how to make vegan crispy rice treats! Traditional treats of this type are usually non-vegan because they are made with marshmallows (which almost always contain gelatin). Luckily, there are a lot of ways to create a similar treat— without the skin, bones, and feet. The night is free, but you have to RSVP so they know how many people need to be catered to. 7 p.m. @ 2169 Mission Street.

Thursday, August 2

Off the Grid is your roaming mobile food extravaganza — bringing you delicious food, with free sides of music, craft and soul. On Thursdays, they roll on over to Golden Gate Park where 15+food trucks gather together and serve the Upper Haight community with some of the cities finest gourmet food. If the fog is creeping in, you can warm yourself with a range of delicious hot dishes, or if the weather is fine you can enjoy some summery desserts. From 5-9 p.m. @ the corner of Stanyan Street and Waller Street.
