A couple of hours ago our parking guru David LaBua, author of Finding the Sweet Spot, provided you with a parking quiz. Here, he explains how to avoid getting a ticket when multiple signs inhabit one post.
Says David:
Multiple signs on one signpost can be confusing and are worthy of an extra moment of review. In this example, you’ll learn what a difference a few inches can make. If approached methodically, you can be sure that you won’t get a ticket or be towed. Let’s break this multi-restriction signpost down one sign at a time, clockwise, from the top left.
1) No parking allowed
left of the sign. Ever.
2) No parking allowed to
the right or left of the
sign from 2 am to 4
am for street sweeping.
3) Parking is allowed to the right of the sign between 9 am and 7 pm, but for only one hour, but not between 3 pm and 6 pm as stated in sign #3 above.
4) No parking to the right
of the sign between
3 pm and 6 pm
Let’s review…you may never park to the left of the sign, but you may park to the right of the sign, but for only an hour, between 9 am and 7 pm, but never between the hours of 3 pm and 6 pm nor between 2 and 4 am every day. Got it?
It’s no wonder that the city makes over $150 million a year from parking tickets. But don’t fret. All of the confusion, duplicity, double-speak and the thousands of pages of parking laws can all be stripped away, simplified, and reduced down to just two simple things that you need to know in any parking situation to avoid getting a ticket:
1) What day is it? 2) What time is it?
Really. That’s the way to break the spell of confusion and frustration. Know the day and time, and remember to read any sign posted within 100 feet.
