Local Performance Groups Combine Forces with Gush

Last year I discovered choreographer Joe Goode for the first time. His company's performance of Traveling Light rocked my world. Heavy, humorous, and deep with meaning, his works offer food for thought as his dancers play perfectly off one another onstage. This month, he's back with a new project featuring two local performance groups: Ledoh and AXIS Dance Company.

In true Joe Goode form, Gush celebrates dramatic impulse for Brava Theater's inaugural dance-theater series. Perceptions of the body and the relationship between performer and audience are challenged in works of movement-based theater exploring sociopolitical issues. See a different show each weekend for three weeks.

From Jan. 13-15, Ledoh brings Butoh to the stage, examining cultural differences in Color Me America. From Jan. 20-22, AXIS evaluates physical ability and boundaries with an ensemble of performers with and without disabilities, and from Jan. 27-29, Joe Goode will debut a new world premiere performance that will no doubt push the envelope.

Call it experimental magic, if you will, but one thing's for sureā€”if you appreciate innovative art, it's not to be missed.

Jan. 13-29, $25-$30, Brava Theater, 2781 24th St., brava.org
