Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink For Cheap (or Free) This Week

By

Each week, we bring you our top picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF.

1. Big Nate's 20th Anniversary: Over in a quiet corner of SOMA, former Warriors center Nate Thurmond has been selling his barbeque to a hungry public for two decades. To celebrate, Big Nate's BBQ is throwing an all-you-can-eat anniversary party, with a cash bar featuring Abita Amber and Mission Blonde Ale, Wrangler Red, Shannon Ridge Sauvignon Blanc and plenty of tasty smoked meat. The price tag? A mere $10-- and Nate will be in attendance for your autograph/photograph needs. (Saturday, October 9, 12-4 pm, at Big Nate's BBQ, 1665 Folsom St., SOMA.)

2. Thirst and 10 at Cityhouse: Located in the Parc 55 Hotel, Cityhouse is hoping to attract a crowd of locals to come watch the game on its big screens. To that end, all Sunday NFL games and Monday Night Football are accompanied by $10 pitchers of Sam Adams; get a pitcher, and you receive a free order of buffalo wings to accompany it. If the 49ers continue their abysmal run, you'll need both. (Sundays and Mondays during football games, at Cityhouse, 55 Cyril Magnin St., Union Square.)

3. Oktoberfest at Social Kitchen & Brewery: If you haven't made the trek to the Sunset to check out cicerone Rich Higgins' new brewery, he's giving you a very good reason: a big Oktoberfest party. Your $25 admission gets you all-you-can-eat sausages, obaster cheese spread, and salad-- which you'll need to wash down the five full-size glasses of Oktoberfest beer that are also included (two from Social and one each from Gordon Biersch, ThirstyBear, and 21st Amendment). A couple of hours here, and even oompah-oompah music will start to sound good. (Thursday, October 7, 6-9 pm, at Social Kitchen & Brewery, 1326 9th Ave., Inner Sunset.)

4. Eos Happy Hour: The Cole Valley stalwart is offering a new happy hour, with $5 glasses of wine, $1 oysters, and a selection of $5-6 appetizers. And its location is hard to beat: hop off the N at Cole and Carl on your way home from work, and you're there. (Sunday-Thursday, 5:30-7, at Eos, 901 Cole St., Cole Valley.)

5. Happy Hour at Osha: Though Osha is a ubiquitous presence in nearly every SF neighborhood, its flagship location is the dramatic former Bong Su space on 3rd Street. That branch is revving up a new happy hour, with $3 Anchor Steam, Sierra Nevada, and Singha beers; $5 wine; $6 classic cocktails; and a selection of $5 bites like calamari salad and tuna poke. Bonus: it runs late, until 8 pm. (Monday-Saturday, 3-8 pm, at Osha, 311 3rd St., SOMA.)
