In Good Taste
Michael Recchiuti’s new “Taste Project” aims to blow the doors right off your preconceived notions of flavor pairings with a series of special events. On Saturday, June 13, join Recchiuti and St. George Spirits Master Distiller Lance Winters for a chocolate and spirits tasting adventure in the Recchiuti kitchen. Tickets for the class, which runs from 2 to 4:30 p.m., are $55 ($65 at the door). Fire in the Belly
Food lovers, science geeks and sociologists can unite at the Commonwealth Club tonight, June 10, when Richard Wrangham, Professor of Biological Anthropology at Harvard, introduces his theory about how cooking affected human evolution. He’ll explain his theory during a lunch time conversation on June 10 at 11:30. Tickets are $15 for non-members ($8 for members) and can be purchased here.
State of The Plate
On Thursday, June 11, Nate Appleman, Chris Cosentino and Traci des Jardins will gather at Omnivore Books at 6 p.m. for a “state of the plate” discussion about restaurants and cooking in San Francisco. Don’t miss this opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the city’s finest chefs. The event is free.
Pig Out
Wondering who will be crowned the “Prince of pork” at this year’s Cochon 555 event? This annual event brings together five chefs (this year it’s Ryan Farr of 4505 Meats, Nate Appleman of A16/SPQR, Staffan Terje of Perbacco, Ravi Kapur of Boulevard and Poggio’s Peter McNee) who participate in a one-day 100 pound pig cook-off. The event begins with a butchery and porchetta demonstration with Taylor Boetticher of the Fatted Calf, then guests can sample the five pigs prepared by the participating chefs, all while drinking wine, cocktails and beer from Magnolia. Fun will be had by all, but in the end, only one chef can be crowned prince. Who will it be? Tickets are $145 (industry folks get a $30 discount) and can be purchased at amusecochon.com
Ragin’ Cajun
The good times will be rolling at Magnolia Pub on June 16, when the restaurant will host a good old-fashioned New Orleans-style crawfish boil. Crawfish by the pound, side dishes aplenty and $3 mugs of house beer. Now that’s some Southern hospitality. For more information, visit magnoliapub.com
Iconic Edibles
At the Great American Food and Wine Festival on June 13, you can sample the most iconic food from around the United States—think pastrami from Katz’s Deli, hot dogs from Pink’s and barbecue from Southside Market, drink American wine in a tent co-curated by A16 wine director Shelley Lindgren and Best Cellars’ Josh Wesson, watch chef demos and listen to great music—all at Shoreline in Mountain View from noon until 10 p.m.. Different levels of tickets are available; visit greatamericanfoodandmusicfest.com for more information.
lissa’s Meal
