You Say Tomato, We Say Get Busy
Though it’s hard to believe now, the drizzly days of an SF winter are just around the corner. Since we believe the best offense is a good defense, we suggest that you load up your pantry with home-canned tomatoes. Come on! All the cool kids are doing it! Pre-order your 20 pound boxes of San Marzanos, Early Girls (20# for $28) or Beefsteaks (10# for $15) from Mariquita Farm, then pick them up in the Mission on Saturday, September 19. You must order by this Thursday, September 17—email your request to ladybugbuyingclub.gmail.com and they will respond with the pick-up location.
A Bird In Hand
While you may be thinking about tomatoes, it’s (really) not too early to be considering your holiday feast, particularly if you want to get in on the action with a Marin Sun Farms heritage turkey. Order your Bourbon Red, Standard Brown or Narragansett by September 31 and save—it’s $6.59/lb. until then, $6.89 thereafter. Should this price give you momentary sticker shock remember: it’s a breed you’re saving, and that don’t come cheap. To order, click here.
Very Fine Swine
On Saturday, September 20, stop by Piccino for yet another pig roast, this one a very special party for Caleb and Deirdra Heekin, authors of two books about food and owners of a very special little bakery and restaurant in the quaintest small town in Vermont, Pane e Salute. There will be pig, of course, as well as pizzas, salads and other goodies. Come by anytime after 2 p.m. (no reservations required) to check it out!
Fine China
The grand doyenne of Chinese cooking, Cecilia Chiang, will be celebrating her 90th birthday with a party at Yank Sing on Friday, September 18th—the party will include a banquet-worthy spread benefiting such a legend, along with musical performances throughout the night. Tickets are $195, but proceeds go to benefit the Chinese American International School, to benefit a scholarship fund in Chiang’s name. Tickets can be purchased by calling 415-861-0866 or via email at j_lor@cais.org
All-American Appetites
If you need yet another reason to kick off your week at a bar, Bloodhound has now upped the ante by enticing Pizza Politano (the mobile wood-burning pizza makers of Thursday market acclaim) to set up shot at the bar every Monday night so you can indulge in the greatest of American trifectas: beer, pizza and football (they’ll be showing the games each week).
