5 LGBT Bars in the East Bay to Celebrate Pride

By

This Pride Week, check out these friendly LGBT bars in the East Bay for some drinks, dancing, and—who knows—maybe even romancing.

The White Horse

The White Horse bar is iconic. Possibly dating back to the 1930s, this place is the oldest continuously operating gay-and-lesbian bar in the United States. Casual, unassuming, and diverse, the White Horse revels in its lack of trendiness. Patrons range from 21–70 years of age and come here for tête-à-têtes and boogie-down productions rather than pick-ups. Tip: Tuesday Karaoke nights are a must. // 6551 Telegraph Ave (Oakland), whitehorsebar.com

Club 1220

Known as Contra Costa's oldest gay and lesbian establishment, Club 1220's Walnut Creek location is queer-oriented, but welcomes all walks of life. With nonstop events (such as a Drag Review) and karaoke every Wednesday, we hear Club 1220 is the hottest (and friendliest) spot to be. Beware: The bartenders pour the drinks a little stiff, so come with a designated driver in tow. // 1220 Pine St. (Walnut Creek), club1220.com

Club BNB (Bench and Bar)

Club BNB, currently the largest gay and lesbian nightclub in the Bay Area, offers pageants, drag shows, and go-go dancers for your viewing pleasure. Opened more than 35 years ago, this Oakland landmark provides multiple dance floors, a billiards room, a smoking parlor, and a VIP lounge. If you get to Club BNB before the clock strikes 11 p.m., you'll pay a $10 cover (after 11 p.m., the price jacks up to $15-$20). // 2120 Broadway (Oakland), club-bnb.com

Club 21

The self-described "San Francisco Bay Area's #1 Latin nightclub," Club 21 promises a diverse and welcoming crowd. This spot is 100% gay owned and operated, with weekly Latin parties such as Latin Explosion (Friday nights) and La Bota Loca (Saturday nights). Grab a drink from one of the six bars and hit the dance floor! There are three levels to choose from, and each one plays a different style of music. // 2111 Franklin St. (Oakland), club21oakland.com

The World Famous Turf Club

If you're looking for a local vibe, venture no further than this spot. Featuring a renovated patio (complete with water fountains), live music, pool, and darts, the Turf Club is a fun, laidback spot to land after a long day. Once the sun goes down, shake your thang on the indoor dance floor. // 22519 Main St. (Hayward), worldfamousturfclub.com
