Two Local Coffee Gurus Offer Their Tips for SXSW

By

A Film About Coffee director Brandon Loper and Wrecking Ball Coffee founder Nicholas Cho are both headed to South by Southwest(March 7-16) this year. The two coffee gurus let us in on what they're bringing to Texas and offered some tips on what to do once you get there.

When local filmmaker Brandon Loper took his first, revelatory sip of Blue Bottle Coffee’s Ethiopian Misty Valley brew in 2008, it was the beginning of a quest that would result in his first feature, A Film About Coffee.

Produced by Mission-based studio Avocados and Coconuts, the movie shines natural light on the history of joe and follows Loper—along with notable roasters from Ritual Coffee and Portland’s beloved Stumptown—to Rwanda and Honduras. Loper is now taking his film out on the festival circuit, with the hope of debuting at SXSW.

Wrecking Ball Coffee founder Nicholas Cho, on the other hand, is a regular at Austin’s annual South by Southwest. He shares his favorite spots around town in time for this year’s festival:

STAY:Hotel San José has “everything you’d want in a hip place to stay, with a touch of Texas charm.”

BBQ: At Franklin Barbecue, “the brisket is enough to make you forgive anything bad you’ve ever heard about Texas. It’s worth the three-hour wait.”

BURGERS: “Take a big bite out of a double with cheese at P. Terry’s Burger Stand, and try saying ‘In-N-Out is still better’ five times fast.”

DRINKS: From barman Chris Bostick, formerly of LA’s The Varnish, Half Step Bar is slated to make its much-anticipated debut this month.

JAVA:Houndstooth Coffee is “as good as any shop you’ll find in SF.”
