This Week's Hottest Events: Yuck, Free Art Day at YBCA, and the SF Ballet at Stern Grove
This indie Brit band made quite a splash onto the scene with their self-titled debut earlier this year. Some are calling them a mix of Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. Now's your chance to catch them at an intimate show before they get too big to play the Indy.
When: 8 p.m., Tues. 7/26 - Wed. 7/27
Where: The Independent, 628 Divisadero St.
Ode to Andy Warhol
It's time to get tested. The Factory, a new unrestricted retail space in SoMa, will be transformed into Andy Warhol's infamous SoHo Factory where partygoers can watch projections of the artist's screetests and get silly in a Warhol-style photo booth while dancing to live music. It's all an opportunity to learn more about The Evans Group's efforts to keep the behind-the-scenes fashion industry working year-round.
When: 6-10 p.m., Thurs. 7/28
Where: The Factory, 370 Fourth St.
A Perfect Circle
Talk about a revival. If you're still in love with James Iha from the Smashing Pumpkins and remember Josh Freese from Nine Inch Nails, Devo, and The Vandals, get yourself over to Sacramento for what's sure to be a thrasher of a show.
When: 8 p.m., Fri. 7/29
Where: Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, 1515 J St., Sacramento
Strange Travel Suggestions
When travel writer Jeff Greenwald tells stories of his trips, people listen. He's our local Bill Bryson. Now, his show of improvised monologues, which involve audience members spinning a wheel of fortune, is back by popular demand. For jet setters and homebodies alike.
When: 8 p.m., Fri. 7/29 – Sat. 8/27
Where: The Cabaret at The Marsh Berkeley, 2120 Allston Way, Berkeley
From Britain with Love
With the heartbreaking shutdown of the Red Vic Movie House, now couldn't be a better time to support the city's few remaining independent theaters. Co-presented by the SF Film Society, you'll have your chance at 6 films representing the best of British independent cinema—three of which are making their U.S. premiere and three more that have screened only at select U.S. festivals. Start practicing your Cockney English now.
When: Fri. 7/29 – Thurs. 8/4
Where: Balboa Theater, 3630 Balboa St.
Free Art and Music Day at YBCA and Yerba Buena Gardens
Free access to visual art, performance, film, workshops, and music starts here. Experience YBCA's Bay Area Now 6 triennial via a pot symposium with artist Tony Labat or an optics workshop with Chris Fraser. See films that changed the lives of three Bay Area filmmakers or partake in single-malt whiskey and straight razor shaves. And to top it off, walk outside to the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival for a free 1 p.m. show by 9-piece retro/funk/soul band Lord Loves a Working Man.
When: 12 - 8 p.m., Sat. 7/30
Where: YBCA, 701 Mission St.
SF Ballet at Stern Grove
This is your chance to catch the SF Ballet while they're on summer hiatus. They'll present a selection of works from their current repertory—from dances to music composed by everyone from Schubert and Bach to Broken Social Scene.
When: 2 p.m., Sun. 7/31
Where: Stern Grove, 19th Ave. and Sloat Blvd.
