Weekend Guide: Renegade Craft Fair and Films at the Roxie

By

This weekend is full of all things arts and crafts.

SHOP

Renegade Craft Fair

What: Renegade Craft Fair is taking a trip to San Francisco to unite makers and shakers in the Fort Mason Center. The traveling craft show celebrates and showcases indie-artisans crafting everything from hand-strung jewelry to hand-stitched apparel to hand-crafted furniture. Bay Area favorites Shades of Sugar Bakeshop, Jicama, and Post Street Creamery will be on hand peddling their goodies to fuel you for a long weekend of shopping.

Where: Check out crafters like Lost Girls Vintage and Outlaw Trading Co. at the Herbst and Festival Pavilions in the Fort Mason Center at 2 Marina Blvd.

When: You can peruse the vendors on July 18 and 19 from 11am to 6pm. A Wholesale Market will kick off the event on Friday, July 17 from 12-5pm.

ART

SOMArts Night Light: Multimedia Garden Party

What: For one night each year, SOMArts, a unique cultural center celebrating community engagement and the mingling of counterculture with traditional art forms, is decked out in over 50 light-filled installations from talented performers and visual artists. Bite-sized previews of the show include "artist creates political backdrop with Super Soaker" by CHOKE and "San Francisco's unique circus history comes alive" by New Circus.

Where: SOMArts' huge cultural center and haven for creators and imaginers is located at 934 Brannan Street.

When: The unique ode to light and art happens on Saturday, July 18 from 8:30pm-midnight.

WATCH

San Francisco Frozen Film Festival

What: No, it's not a weekend long celebration of the ever-present "Let It Go"—The SF Frozen Film Festival is an exhibition of talented indie filmmakers and artists. The festival, housed at the Roxie Theater, is intended to encourage aspiring youths from underserved communities that there are pathways to careers in the film arts. The name is a nod to Mark Twain's ever-wise exclamation that "the coldest winter I ever spent was my summer in San Francisco."

Where: You can catch the work of young talent, including the documentary "Delta Dawn" and feature film "Pretend We're Kissing" at the Roxie Theater at 3117 16th Street.

When: Films will be screened on July 16, 17, and 18. A full schedule can be found here

Now For Now

What: Now For Now is the long-awaited, multi-media physical theater collaboration between Bay Area theater mavens Mark Jackson and Megan Trout. Running through July 26, the performance explores communication via varying technologies: three relationships seek to grow or fall apart through their use of smart phones and laptops.

Where: The Mission's Z Space, hub for creative development and talented performers, hosts the show on its Z Below stage, located at 470 Florida Street.

When: The innovative show runs through July 26, with performances Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 5pm.
