7 New Cafes to Try Out in San Francisco

By

Hey, sleepyhead! It’s time to perk up at these seven new cafes around town.

Hearth Coffee Roasters

The Castro has gained a pretty fantastic new cafe from Ariana Akbar and James Kafader, previously of Brown Owl Coffee, who are roasting their own coffee. There’s also an extensive in-house baking scenario, with one hundred percent organic pastries, including the French butter croissant (oui). Another fun thing: they offer coffee service (just like tea service), coffee flights, and coffee pairings, plus there are beers and wines to go with the small plates. 3985 17th Street (at Market)

Hours: Mon–Tue 7am–2pm, Wed–Thu 7am–9pm, Fri–Sat 7am–10pm, closed Sun.

La Capra Coffee

This new coffee and cafe project in the FiDi comes from Mitchell and Steven Rosenthal (Town Hall, Anchor & Hope, Salt House), who partnered with cappuccino master Hanna Suleiman of Caffè Greco to create their own Italian-inspired roast. You can also enjoy baked goods from Neighbor and Starter Bakery, plus some creative sandwiches and salads. The space has a nice clean look from Sagan Piechota Architecture, and you’ll find a little bit of seating too. 50 Fremont (at Mission).

Hours: Mon–Fri 6am–6pm; lunch begins at 10:30am

Mazarine Coffee

This new downtown cafe, named after Paris’ oldest public library, has quite a unique offering, starting with its chic look from Boor Bridges Architecture. They serve Klatch Coffee, a roaster from Southern California, along with Ritual, and you’ll find pastries from Starter Bakery, an all-day menu of sandwiches and salads (served on Heath—classy café, this one), and beer and wine too. 720 Market (at Kearny)

Hours: Mon-Fri 7am–7pm, Sat 10am–5pm

Rainbow Grocery

The next time you swing by Rainbow for your weekly allocation of cheese or kombucha, you’ll notice a new coffee and tea kiosk in the front of the store, serving Stumptown Coffee Roasters and a variety of teas. 1745 Folsom (at 13th Street)

Hours: Mon–Sat 8am–6pm and Sun 9am–3pm

Red Door Coffee

Many SoMa workers are already familiar with Red Door Coffee at 111 Minna, but here’s a second location that they opened nearby, which features a lounge and open-air plaza. In addition to serving Four Barrel coffee, there’s also Wi-Fi (and outlets!) and some lunch items from 1601 Bar & Kitchen. Once the beer and wine license kicks in, there will be a happy hour (and later hours) as well. 505 Howard (at First Street)

Hours: Mon–Fri 7am–5pm and Sat 8am–1pm

Snowbird Coffee

The Inner Sunset has this new petite cafe that took over the former Drip’d Coffee Lab location. You’ll find coffee from different roasters on a rotating basis, plus some of their own roasts. 1352 Ninth Avenue (at Irving)

Hours: Wed–Fri 7am–6pm, Sat–Sun 8am–7pm, Mon 7am–6pm, and closed Tuesday.

Weaver’s Coffee & Tea

Another new spot in this Castro is this cafe from organic San Rafael roaster John Weaver (he was formerly a roaster at Peet’s). You’ll find it in the same building as Fitness SF, and a patio should be coming this spring. 2301 Market (at Noe)

Hours: Mon–Thu 5am–12am, Fri 5am–11pm, Sat 5am–10pm, Sun 6am–9pm
