Christmas Countdown: Spanking New Olive Oil

You've got until next Friday to finalize your gifts for your foodie friends and family. Your time is similarly limited when it comes to olio nuovo, olio nuevo or—a less cool way to say it—new olive oil. The fall is when most of the olives around here are pressed and the oil is generally available at the latest until mid-winter. New olive oil is peppery, robust and has some serious personality compared to its mellower, older sibling. Here are a few we'd recommend. They make great, if heavy, stocking stuffers.

McEvoy Ranch released and bottled their unfiltered new oil at the end of November. Made in the Tuscan style, fruity Frantoio olives constitute 75 percent of their blend while Leccino olives—which makes up 20 percent of the mix—gives it a peppery finish. $22.

• Then there's Sciabica from Modesto, a preferred olive oil of chefs such as David Kinch and Thomas Keller. Try their bold, cloudy, unfliltered fall harvest Manzanillo oil. If you order it by tomorrow, they guarantee Christmas Eve delivery, gift wrapping and free shipping. 25.4 oz for $45

• For the in-person experience, there's Round Pond. Tomorrow they're hosting a "fresh olive oil day" which means you can actually get a bottle and have it filled up directly into your glass bottle. A reservation is recommended. The cost is 7 cents per ml, with a 100 ml minimum.
