Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink For Cheap (or Free) This Week

By

1. Scoutmob Hit at Gingerfruit: Local deals site Scoutmob is throwing a party tonight at the new Castro bar Gingerfruit, with $5 specialty cocktails like the Delicious Sour and Classic Caipirinha, happy-hour prices on all other drinks, and free snacks like potstickers, sliders, and fries. They'll also be handing out plenty of swag and goodies. (Wednesday, July 13th, 6-8 pm, at Gingerfruit, 2029 Market St., Upper Market.)

2. Half-Off Drinks at Ahn: The Tenderloin's new sushi and soju lounge, Ahn, is hoping to lure in the neighborhood with the offer of two-for-one sake and soju cocktails with the purchase of lunch or dinner, through the end of July. Since they're open until 2 am, consider heading over for a late-night snack with a final cocktail; non-night owls might want to give it a try after work. (Daily through July 31st at Ahn Sushi & Soju, 177 Eddy St., Tenderloin.)

3. Smoke 'N' Barrel at Town Hall: Though Town Hall disappointed many FiDi denizens by not bringing back their lunchtime BBQ service this year, they're making up for it by offering a 'cue-centric happy hour all summer long. $5 spicy wings, reuben sliders and cornmeal-crusted oysters, plus other treats from the smoker, are available for noshing, and $3 Trumer Pils and $5 cocktails and wine by the glass should quench your thirst. (Monday-Friday, 4-6 pm, at Town Hall, 342 Howard St., SOMA.)

4. Weekend Oyster Happy Hour: Pierre's Oyster Bar, located in the Grand Cafe, hopes to tempt weekend drinkers with a new happy hour. $1 oysters and $2 baked clams are available, with $5 glasses of sparkling wine to wash them down. Or if you're feeling really oyster-crazy, you can get a half-dozen bivalves, along with a glass of sparkling wine or beer, for just $10. (Fridays and Saturdays; Oysters/clams/sparkling wine 5-7 pm, oyster-and-drink combo all night, at Pierre's Oyster Bar at Grand Cafe, 501 Geary St., Union Square.)

5. Cocktail Party at Fifth Floor: Dinner at the upscale Fifth Floor can be pricey, but if you want a taste of what they're up to, swing by their "Cocktail Party" happy hour. Every evening, they offer a rotating selection of three $5 cocktails in the lounge, plus free bites like crostini, gougeres, and beef tartare. Feel like staying for dinner? They're running a special "Homage to New England" menu for the summer, with treats like lobster rolls, clam chowder, and clam cakes available only in the bar. (Daily, 5-7 pm, at Fifth Floor, Hotel Palomar, 12 4th St., SOMA.)
