Six New Murals Depicting Iconic SF Make a Splash on Hemlock Alley

By

Take a walk down Hemlock Alley in the Tendernob this afternoon and you'll find yourself amidst an ever-more vibrant scene.

Unveiling today, the Hemlock Alley Mural is a vivid six-panel creation, spanning a 140-foot wall, by a half-dozen local artists who've paid homage to the history and diversity of San Francisco culture. Each piece highlights an iconic neighborhood: 2017 SFAI grad Ali Futrell brightly captures the parrots of Telegraph Hill; Twin Walls Mural Company tells a story of Chinatown; Mel Waters, known for his 19th Street Santana mural, taps into the Mexican heritage of La Mission, and more.

The installation is part of the ongoing Hemlock Cultural Narrative Mural Project, created to bring artistic verve to the neighborhood and to transform its back streets into creative destinations. The effort is organized by Lower Polk Neighbors, Lower Polk Community Benefits District, the SF Office of Workforce and Economic Development, Chevalier Partners, and Interstice Architects.

Swing by today (3-6pm) for the launch party with a a performance by Senegalese singer and dancer Ousseynou Kouyate. Can't make it? Take a digital tour of the new murals in our slideshow below. // Hemlock Alley, between Polk and Larkin Streets (Tendernob), register at eventbrite.com.
