It's pretty tough to stop at just one cupcake, so a broad menu of flavors with some culinary creativity from Deelish Cupcakes helps the cause. Apple cider, vanilla, strawberry Champagne, and pineapple upside down cupcake are among the rotating flavors here. This line of cupcakes is sold in the ground floor of the Eden Cafe in the Kaiser building, and special flavors include: refreshing orange juice, honey lavender, and red velvet. Get there early as these cupcakes sell out quickly. 1800 Harrison St.
Downtown lunchers near Ogawa Plaza are gobbling up hot and crispy dirty fries, burgers (the porcine Cuban version has its fans), and fried chicken sandwiches at Crossburgers, a new spot that appears to be doing brisk opening business. Burgers are cooked to medium here and that's the house policy. In the good news department, the kitchen is an open space and always clean, run by Chef Eddie Blyden (Alembic, Miss Pearl's Jam House). Look for kicky “cross sauce” which is technically a secret but reportedly made up of ketchup, mayo, mustard, and chile hot sauce. Soup may be that one dish that while technically not tough to pull off in a home kitchen, definitely tastes better when made by someone else – especially when we're hungover or sick. With that in mind, Little Spoon Soup serves fresh batches of flavors that of late included creamy tomato cashew, and spinach lentil with green garlic. Little Spoon originated in Berkeley but the selling points have since migrated to Oakland. The ingredients are organic and seasonal and all tidily served in Mason jars. This line of “Hecka fresh. Hecka local. Hecka East Bay” goodness is sold at the farmers' markets on Friday in Old Oakland (9th St between Broadway & Clay) and Sunday in Temescal (5300 Claremont Ave- behind the Old DMV). Fresh bread from Phoenix Pastificio is the other menu item and later this year, there will be a Soupscription service, with weekly bike delivery of fresh soup throughout the East Bay. Sounds souper.
