A Winter Wonderland
President's Day weekend travelers were rewarded for all the hard effort it took to actually reach Tahoe--a seven-hour drive from the city, if you were lucky--by the biggest snowfall of the season. And it just keeps getting better for ski junkies and snow bunnies alike. Northstar-at-Tahoe, for example, has accummulated 59 inches of powder in the last week alone, with the promise of more in coming tonight, as a winter storm lingers over the Sierras.
Down the road from Northstar, Alpine Meadows has a base of 96 to 150 inches with 20 new inches of white stuff, while resorts in the southern rim have bases ranging from 50 (Heavenly) to 146 inches (Kirkwood).
The moral of this post: Drop everything this weekend and get thee to Tahoe, stat.
But before you go throwing your snowboard in your trunk and hitting the pavement, some things to be wary of: Driving conditions are rough and slow; you should allot a couple hours worth of padding if you're on a schedule. Chain requirements have been implemented on many of the highways like 89 and 50, so if you don't have four-wheel-drive, invest in a set of chains and learn how to put them on yourself, to save time and extra money from having to find someone to do it for you. Pack a flashlight, blankets, food and water in case of emergencey. Keep a conservatively safe distance between you and the car in front, as vehicles have been fishtailing all over the road in the past few days.
All that aside, happy skiing (and pack us in your suitcase, will ya?)!
