Where To Drink Beer In Sonoma

By

We all know and love the longstanding Bear Republic Brewing Company in Healdsburg, Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, and Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa (famous for its annual and uproariously popular Pliny the Younger release). But how about these sudsy new gems in Sonoma?

Warped Brewing Company, Sebastopol

This artsy-grunge Barlow hot spot comes from owners Noah and Mirjam Bolmer, who craft beers designed to complement the cuisine at their other business, Barley and Hops Tavern in Occidental. Perch on a stool and sip at the bar overlooking the fermenting tanks, play a game of Space Invaders, and revel in small, seasonal batches like a floral Grapefruit Juniper beer. Other sippable delights include Crash of '83 (single IPA), Orbital Outrage (a hoppy California common), and Pixelated Porter (molasses porter).

Fogbelt Brewing Company, Santa Rosa

Using exclusively California-grown hops, brewers Paul Hawley and Remy Martin work out of an urban cool taphouse in a little Santa Rosa strip mall plopped in an industrial neighborhod next to Highway 101. Delicious beers include Atlas Blonde (“light and crisp with a fruity hop aroma”), Del Norte IPA (“hop driven with a malty finish”), and Armstrong Stout (“rich with flavors of chocolate and coffee but finishes light and balanced”).

BeerCraft, Rohnert Park

Part tasting bar and part retail store, this cozy store keeps customers coming back for special beers of the day at 50 percent off (limit one to a customer), a craft beer of the month club, and 12 rotating taps. BeerCraft also features a revolving list of up to 30 new beers each week.

Taps Restaurant & Tasting Room, Petaluma

Recently relocated and expanded in a new downtown Petaluma space, the pub sits next door to another beer shrine, Dempsey’s Restaurant & Brewery. Owner Eric Lafranchi features ever-changing three dozen rare beers from around the world. He's also known to break out a waiver form before letting people eat his fiery spicy chicken wings.

St. Florian’s Brewery, Windsor

This friendly joint is a tribute to the patron saint of firefighters and chimney sweeps since owner Aron Levin is a captain at the Windsor Fire District. He and wife, Amy, donate a minimum of 5 percent of profits to fire-related and community-based organizations, plus all the grain waste is recycled through local ranches where it is used to feed rescue animals. Be sure to taste the signature IPA, the Brown Ale, and the Cali Common.

Woodfour Brewing Company, Sebastopol

Yet another reason to love the Barlow, this loud and bouncy destination woos with an entire wall displaying international beers. But most drinkers come here for the made-on-site suds like the Wet Hop Session Ale No. 1 fashioned of hops grown at nearby Wildo Ranch. Brewmaster and co-owner Seth Wood likes to change things up frequently, and works to complement the inventive Cal-global cuisine crafted by chef-partner Jamil Peden.

On a final note, the Sonoma County Tourism just put together a handy suds map for your brew sipping pleasure.
