Ryan Jones has travel on the brain. Back in SF after a yearlong stint in Southeast Asia, where he was working as a digital artist for Industrial Light & Magic, the 32-year-old began thinking about exotic locales and the process of getting from place to place. “With the advent of Google, traditional maps have kind of gone away,” says the Stanford University alum. “But there’s something really artistic about them.” The same could be said for Jones’ series of cartographic pencil-on-paper works. Layered with sections of maps, each drawing has a missing piece, begging viewers to contemplate an area of negative space. Jones, who lives in Presidio Heights and has shown his work at 111 Minna, Space Gallery, and on the cover of Wired, is looking for a home to showcase these destination-themed explorations. Look for a new series of large-scale paintings and drawings later this year.
