Let's be real. Most of us aren't going to be able to buy a house in San Francisco anytime soon. But that doesn't mean you have to live in a shoebox.

A recent study showed that you'll need to be bringing in a minimum of $179,390 to afford a $895,000 home in the city. To get a house that you'll actually want to live in and within city limits (where the average price sits just over $1 million), you're going to need a salary of $290,630. Not raking in the dough? Don't fret. Renters can still still score some posh digs—without having to worry about roofing issues, HOA, or mowing the lawn. Enter The Martin, a boutique apartment community in artsy Dogpatch that began leasing in December 2017.

Situated on the re-purposed grounds of the Martin Shipping Company and with super easy access to the light rail, The Martin's 92 sparkly rentals have all the trappings you'd expect from a luxe new complex in SF, even if you can only afford the sub-500-square-foot studio ($3,015/month and up). Yes, the apartments have that modern-minimalist-packaged vibe you'll find everywhere else in town—white walls, light-hued wood, stainless steel appliances, in-unit laundry—but private balconies promise great views of the bay and common spaces include pretty nooks for work or reading; a sunny rooftop with barbecues and lounge-y seating; and a gym. Plus, they're pet friendly.

After just a few months, The Martin is 50 percent full, with one-bedroom ($3,670/677 sq. ft.) and two-bedroom (starting at $4,805/1,000sf) spaces also still available. This is the price of adulting in the city.

You'll no longer have to lament the closing of Brainwash if you have your own washer and dryer.
