Here's an update on some of the big food news that dropped this week, including a local star chef who's headed for the small screen.
First off, Douglas Keane, chef-owner of the Michelin two-star Cyrus in Healdsburg which closed in October, revealed this week that he's part of the cast of the upcoming fifth season of Top Chef Masters. He follows in the footsteps of his mentor Traci Des Jardins, who was on Season Three, and S.F. chefs Michael Chiarello and Hubert Keller, who both made it into the final three in the inaugural season, only to lose to Rick Bayless. Last week brough the tragic news of a major fire at Chez Spencer (82 14th Street) on the Mission/SoMa border. This week, chef-owner Laurent Katgely tells that the Chronicle that the burnt-out restaurant is pretty much "gone," and he likely won't be trying to reopen in the same location. He is, however, vowing to reopen elsewhere. [Chron]
And we have a hardhat preview from Haighteration of the upcoming "mezcaleria" and restaurant from the Colibri folks dubbed La Urbana, which is under construction at the corner of Divisadero and Grove. They're planning on a summer opening, and in addition to a wide selection of mezcals, there will be an upscale food menu modeled on contemporary cantinas in Mexico City. [Haighteration, Inside Scoop]
