So, many a wide-eyed surfer could have told you this around a bonfire at Ocean Beach, but now it's been confirmed by some legit research: great white sharks troll the Bay. In what's believed to be the first scientific confirmation of great whites in the area, researchers from Stanford and UC Davis tagged 179 white sharks from 2000 to 2008 and found that five of those bad boys swam beneath the Golden Gate Bridge in 2007 and 2008. Freak. Out.

But not really. Contrary to the folklore, there have only been 99 white shark attacks in all of California and 10 fatalities since 1952. And the only documented great white death in SF was at Baker Beach in 1959.  But if you're still freaked out, here's where to avoid: Southeast Farallon Island, Tomales Point, Año Nuevo Island and Point Reyes National Seashore. According to the study, that's where they party.
