For our column Jams We Love, we're turning you onto the songs that keep us going every day. Here, a playlist of some of the best Bay Area bands headed to SXSW.
1. Main Attraktionz, "Take 1," featuring A$AP Rocky
Heavy on the glassy-eyed synths and fat-bottomed low end, this Oakland rap duo fits right in with the current avalanche of weirdo, genre-expanding wave of rappers and hip-hoppers now turning up on the internet. Their effortless, lackadaisical style, matched perfectly with producer Clams Casino's beats, attention to detail and atmospherics elevate them beyond just stoned youngsters passing the time in the East Bay. Catch them at Treasure Island on March 14.
2. Nick Waterhouse, "Some Place"
This dapper dude excels in raucous 60s R&B shakedowns that sound right at home next to the dusty Ike Turner records in your garage. Wear your most crisp button-down and your dancing shoes, because, with beer in hand, you'll find yourself shimmying like your parents did back in the day before you know it. He plays at 512 on March 14, ND on March 15, and 1100 Warehouse on March 16.
3. Soft White Sixties, "When This All Started"
In the vein of the Stone Foxes but much less traditionally bluesy, the Soft White Sixties combines hair metal swagger with the sleek Fleetwood Mac-style heartbreak and stomp. Look for them kicking out the jams and playing at maximum volume The Bat Bar on March 15.
4. Wallpaper., "#Stupidfacedd"
This East Bay crunk outfit has had quite the 2012 already. From getting signed to a major label to performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, they show no signs of shutting down the party. They'll have you laughing, fist-pumping (don't question, just do it) and breaking a major sweat at the ACL Live at Moddy Theater showcase on March 14.
5. Tycho, "A Walk"
For a break from the all the amp-shredding, take a breather at Tycho's set. We named his 2011 album Diveone of our favorites of last year, and for good reason. His ethereal, ecstatic music has the ability to suck you in like few local producers working today. Go down the rabbit hole with him at Mohawk on March 13, at Club De Ville on the 14th, and at Clive Bar on March 16.
As rumblings of SXSW quickly swell to an outright roar, it's hard to ignore the sheer number of Bay Area bands taking over Austin's stages this year. Be sure to check the SXSW website to see when Thee Oh Sees, Stone Foxes, Mikal Cronin, Roach Gigz, Sleepy Sun, Young Prisms, Maus Haus and others are playing.
