Mark Zuckerberg Donates $5 Million to Help California's Dreamers

Boy wonder and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has decided to give back to California's large community of undocumented students seeking a college education.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced they will be donating $5 million to provide scholarships to undocumented students living in the Bay Area.

"America was founded as a nation of immigrants. We ought to welcome smart and hardworking young people from every nation, and to help everyone in our society achieve their full potential. If we help more young immigrants climb the ladder to new opportunities, then our country will make greater progress," the post states.

The money will be given to TheDream.US, a national scholarship program that helps fund education for immigrant youth. TheDream will use the donation to create specific scholarships for over 400 selected Bay Area students to receive tuition assistance. The fund targets students who came to the U.S. as children and received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival status, an immigration policy started by President Obama that gives them exemption from deportation and allows them to work.

And this isn't the first time Zuckerberg has called for immigration reform. Two years ago, he joined a number of other leading technology CEOs to form a public interest group to push for a significant increase in legal immigration and a path to citizenship.
